Let’s take a look at how time goes by and what it’s worth investing in!
Here at Adrenaline we do a lot of testing to help people buy hardware, but sometimes our users overestimate our ability and ask us to predict the future. These are questions like “Does this X card last for three years? “or”If I spend on this Y, can I play everything on Ultra until the next generation of consoles?“It simply came to our notice then.
However, at the same time we have a very large collection of older cards as well as testing knowledge. If we can’t predict the future, we can at least try to map out the past. Often the key phrase “video card for six years“Let’s work with that figure and see how that time has passed for a set of graphics cards, both from AMD and Nvidia’s multiple price points, to see how they’ve fared so far each year by launching some significant games. 2015!
They tested the boards
We will use four video cards for each brand, based on the marketing price and trying to align with direct competitors. The caves that will be released for 2015 are:
$ 649 – high
AMD Radeon R9 Fury X – Released June 2015 – Review
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti – Released June 2015 – Review
$ 329 – high end
AMD Radeon R9 390 – Released June 2015 – Review
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 – Released September 2014 – Review
$ 199 – Intermediate
AMD Radeon R9 380 – Released June 2015 – Review
Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 4GB – Released January 2015 – Review
$ 149 – admission
AMD Radeon R7 370 – Released June 2015 – Review
Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 – Released August 2015 – Review
The graphics in this article will be slightly different than we normally do. Instead of having all the hardware in the same graphical configuration, we are adjusting all of them for a rate of 60fps. We will make it easier to visualize these variations with colors, with ultra blue colors, green in a high setting, medium in yellow, and low in red. Purple indicates that the card failed to complete the test.

Spending more on your card will save you more time
When we look at the progress of the tests, some things are obvious. The first is that yes, spending more on a graphics card will give you higher quality graphics right away, but it will be feasible to play in better settings over the years. High-end cards only need a mid-range adjustment from the fourth year onwards, something the new generation of consoles will be quite full of by 2020. Another set that went well was the high-end ones: the Radeon R9 390 and GTX. 970 were more than 2/3 of the time running high quality or ultra quality games.
The situation is more complicated in the input and intermediate segment. The GTX 950 and R7 370 passed most of the tests with difficulty and even reached the level. unplayable even with graphic quality and very low resolution. Mediators, on the other hand, spent half their time in medium or high quality, but from the third year onwards they began to suffer a lot, having to use more and more of the pre-established medium or low graph. This is very clear in the table below, where we have summarized the settings used in each card in the 13 games tested:
Looking at this graph, perhaps the conclusion is this: I will spend as much as I can on playing any game for six years. But we believe that one last piece of information is missing. Since we’ve shown a lot of graphics so far, here’s one last one. Below is the official presentation price of these products in dollars:
When we look at the cost curve, high-end models typically show a big jump on a high-end product – much higher than an entry-level card or a mid-range and high-end card. Looking at the two graphics together, the GeForce GTX 970 and Radeon R9 390 segment seem to be the best long-term strategies, keeping the performance of FullHD / Ultra at almost 2/3 and costing much less than the high-end ones.
It’s good to remember that we use heavy games as a reference, including high-demand versions. A GTX 960 or R9 380 can make it easier to manage to launch competitive games, such as those that require less graphics performance. Another factor to consider is the devaluation of the top card.
Balancing price and durability makes mid-range / high-end cards the most interesting
If we keep all the data and trends in the future, something that is not available to us to know if it will happen, it is always worth remembering, the models with these features today are cards like GeForce RTX 3060 Ti up to RTX 3070 Tire. Nvidia and Radeon RX 6700 XT and 6800 AMD. Or at least they would be in a world with normal prices, closer to what the manufacturers suggest. Unfortunately, it is up to the consumer to research the value and price evolution curve of how much he will spend and how long he will be able to play to find a “sweet spot” on that balance. quality.
