The first race of the Formula 2 weekend in Azerbaijan took place on Saturday morning (11) at a different time than usual – after the F1 classification – due to the time zone. Thus, the main category started before it appeared on the track. And the start was already playing a key role, taking Jehan Daruvala to the top spot and giving him a chance to escape. But the second part of the race was completely chaotic and the one who knew how to take advantage of it was Frederik Vesti, who took the lead at the end and went for the first victory in the category.

The race had no problems from 21 laps to 14 laps. From there, successive accidents, three interventions by security cars and the possibility of pulling Vestik and attacking Daruvala until he was overtaken.
Daruvala took the lead early in the day, Vestik slipped and Jake Hughes, who was on the pole, went very badly. Vestik gave a few laps to overtake Hughes and meanwhile Daruvala was opening above 3s. It would have been enough for a quiet victory had it not been for teammate Dennis Hauger’s accident, as he only fell to try to overtake Théo Pourchaire.
In the first restart, Daruvala defended well, but Enzo Fittipaldi and Jüri Vips found each other and the security car intervened again. Then, in the second restart, Vestik attacked, Daruvala threw the dust and changed the scorer by hand. Also in third place was Richard Verschoor who had an accident when he was attacked by Liam Lawson and had to re-enter the security car.
The final restart was only for the final lap, but it also ended the problems. Not in the front, where Vestik held on and won hard, but in the back. Cem Bölükbasi and Calan Williams were also involved in a serious accident, including Ralph Boschung. It had to be finished as it was before.
Thus, Vesti’s first victory in Formula 2. Daruvala and Lawson closed the podium, and Marcus Armstrong, Felipe Drugovich, Logan Sargeant, Theo Pourchaire and Ayumu Iwasa took the points. Hughes and Royn Nissany closed out the top-10.
