Abdominal inflammation: what are the possible causes? | Drauzio Varella

Gas and bloating are common complaints that anyone can experience from time to time. But if the problem is repeated, you need to investigate.

Feeling full, swollen, with one gas it is a feeling that everyone has felt at least once in their life. Stomach bloating – which often comes with too much gas – can come in many forms, from food that doesn’t go down well to a gastrointestinal disease that needs to be investigated.

In some cases, adopting simple eating habits can alleviate the problem. However, when symptoms appear frequently, it is best to go to the doctor and have specific tests to find out what is causing the discomfort and thus the most appropriate treatment.

Habits that hinder digestion

Filling is the feeling of a bloated stomach when a person feels full even though they eat little at that meal or during the day. One of the reasons for this is the way we eat. Those who chew a little, for example, tend to feel more bloated.

That’s what Dr. Vanessa Prado, Digestive Apparatus Surgeon, Nove de Julho Hospital Specialty Center for Digestive System Specialization, Brazilian Digestive System Surgery (SBDC) and Brazilian Association of Coloproctology (SBC). “If you are a person who eats too fast, this causes bloating, as the food will fall to the stomach in its entirety, without being crushed, and the stomach will need more time to process digestion, so it will cause more fermentation in the stomach. ”

Excessive consumption of carbohydrates, according to the expert, can also lead to higher fermentation and therefore in favor of bloating.

Conditions and diseases that can cause inflammation

Gwho has gastritis, which means that the inflammation of the stomach wall also feels swollen. Therefore, when the stomach is swollen, it takes longer to digest, which can lead to increased gas and inflammation of the stomach. Other common illnesses that can cause these symptoms are lactose intolerance (when a person cannot digest the sugar in the milk) and celiac disease (protein in wheat, barley and rye when there is intolerance to gluten).

“Remember that intolerance is different from allergy. The patient, for example, is not intolerant, but the egg is cooked with protein and everything he eats with the eggs. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to investigate two things: intolerances and allergies, intolerance being the most common cause of inflatables, ”said Dr. Vanessa.

When a person has swelling in the lower abdomen, below the navel line, the causes may be different, for example. constipation (difficulty in evacuation), excess trapped gases, food poisoning or even a symptom of illness appendicitis, diverticulitis and even endometriosis. “Inflammatory bowel problems are the ones that cause dysfunction, which means that bowel movement will change as a result of these diseases, which will create a greater inflatability.”

Tumors in the region can also cause this sensation, as they interfere with the intestine.

How to improve digestion

The specialist recommends some measures that benefit the digestive process and thus help to prevent unpleasant symptoms in the digestive tract, such as bloating and excessive gas:

  • Avoid drinking during meals. The doctor says that up to two fingers of the liquid does not cause any problems, but it is best to eat and drink for 30 minutes to an hour;
  • Try to stay in the table and avoid eating while touching your computer or mobile phone, for example, because this keeps you away from chewing;
  • Pay attention to what you are eating and try to chew slowly to grind the food better;
  • Some vegetables and greens produce more gas, such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. If you have an intestinal problem, it is best to avoid this type of food;
  • Avoid lying down after eating, in addition to disturbing digestion (which can cause bloating, gas and colic), this habit promotes reflux and can cause heartburn, burning and itching.

What to do to alleviate

In addition to measures to help digestion, according to the expert, a common tip to relieve excess gas and bloating is a chamomile tea. “Chamomile helps a lot in reducing that. Half an hour after a meal, a glass of warm tea helps digestion and prevents the creation of excess gas, ”he explains.

“This is natural advice, but if you are always bloated with gas, if you have cramps, it is a good idea to look for a healthcare professional to ask for specific tests, for example. endoscopy, colonoscopy and ultrasound for proper treatment with medication, ”he said. “The improvement in this situation comes from a set of habits, food selection, proper chewing, and the search for a professional.”

For those with bloating caused by constipation, the advice is to increase your fluid intake and consume more fiber, vegetables and fruits. In addition, exercise is an important ally: walking, for example, helps to stimulate bowel movement.

Remember that it is normal to feel stomach upset from time to time. It can sometimes be the result of overeating, as a result of a person having to eat too fast or a stressful day, as stress can also affect the digestive tract. Conventional medications, such as gas, can relieve symptoms. “It simply came to our notice then. But if you have an average of three to four symptoms a week, it’s best to look for a professional, ”the doctor recommends.
